Since their introduction to the alcohol-free scene in 2020, Thomson and Scott have been making waves with their Noughty wines, and their rouge offering could be the best of the lot. Produced with 100% syrah grapes developed in South Africa, their deliciously well-balanced alcohol-free red wine offering is deep ruby red in colour and contains hints of ripe red fruit, crushed black pepper, dried rose petal and candied cherries integrated with French oak tannins to top it off. Its juicy aromas and balanced taste ensure that this wine alternative is reminiscent of classic South African wine, just without the alcohol.
NEWBLOOD are one of Australia’s most authentic alcohol-free wine brands. Founded in 2020, their mission is to leave a unique mark on the alcohol-free world whilst staying true to their values and brand. Their Non-Alcoholic Shiraz incorporates traditional wine making techniques with a unique triple-edge distillation process, producing a flavourful, aromatic alcohol-free red wine. Built up of notes surrounding blood plum, dark chocolate and earthy tones, the NEWBLOOD Non-Alcoholic Shiraz is soft and juicy with a velvety finish.
Pure Vision were founded in 2005, but their story originates back to the 1950s from a small town in Greece. They’re experts in the high quality, organic wine field and use completely sustainable, vegan processes to produce their wines. They’ve only recently moved into the alcohol-free world, and all their offerings, including the Shiraz, have gone through intense testing processes to ensure their legacy is held in the non-alcoholic department. This Shiraz is contemporary and vibrant, containing flavours surrounding plums, berries and oak to create a full-bodied red wine alternative.
Gnista is a Swedish non-alcoholic drinks brand born in Malmo. All of their drinks are targeted towards those who love the social side of drinking, but are practising being mindful by removing the alcohol. Their French style alcohol-free red wine was designed to be a taste sensation made up of tannins, body, earth, tartness and spice, all whilst bringing the perfect sweetness. Every ingredient is there for a reason, and it’s clear that Gnista have put a lot of time and care into ensuring that this wine is a perfect French wine alternative for those who want to reduce their alcohol intake.
They also have an Italian style alcohol-free red wine with flavours surrounding cherries, liquorice and woody spiciness.
Cimicky is one of the oldest wineries to be established in Australia, founded all the way back in 1842! They pride themselves on their traditional winemaking techniques and style, and this is no different for their alcohol-free offerings, made with premium South-Australian grapes. Their Non-Alcoholic Shiraz has aromas of raspberry, guava and lychee accompanied by a zingy palate, all de-alcoholised and also containing no added sugar.
Cimicky also offers a sparkling non-alcoholic shiraz containing aromas of raspberry and blackcurrant, with a sweet finish and well-balanced bubbles.
Is non-alcoholic red wine good for you?
It has been found that, in moderation, red wine can be good for you due to its antioxidant qualities. It can also reduce the risk of heart disease or a heart attack, as long as it isn’t drunk in excess.
Due to many non-alcoholic red wines being dealcoholised red-wine, they contain similar benefits to alcoholic red wine, but remove the part that can be harmful, the alcohol.
Many people switch to alcohol-free for the health benefits, removing the risks associated with drinking alcohol, generally improving their overall health.
As non-alcoholic red wine contains almost every ingredient normal red wine does, just with no alcohol, they contain similar antioxidant qualities and usually way less calories and sugar than red wine does, meaning they’re definitely way better for you, and somewhat good for you.
Just like everything, drinking alcohol-free red wine is about balance, we wouldn't recommend switching out all your water breaks for a non-alcoholic shiraz, but they’re certainly better for your skin, heart and general health than red wine is.
